RV TIPS & TRICKS

RV Spring Checklist | Get Road-Ready in the Okanagan

RV spring maintenance in the Okanagan is something you don’t want to leave until the last minute. One week the passes are still icy, the next the sun is out, the vineyards are waking up, and every campground from Osoyoos to Sicamous is filling up fast.

If you want to be ready when the season turns — not scrambling in May while your neighbors are already on the road — now is the time to get your motorhome prepped and inspected.

Here’s the checklist our service team at Midtown RV works through every spring. Use it as your starting point.

1. Power and Battery Systems

Cold BC winters are hard on batteries. Before you do anything else, check your house batteries and chassis battery under load — not just with a voltmeter at rest.

  • Test house batteries under load and replace if capacity has dropped below 80%
  • Check chassis battery and terminals for corrosion
  • Inspect battery compartment for moisture or damage
  • Test converter and inverter operation
  • Run your generator under load for at least two hours and check for error codes

Pro tip: If your motorhome sat for more than three months without a trickle charger, assume the batteries need testing regardless of their age.

2. Plumbing and Water Systems

Winterization protects your plumbing — but de-winterizing correctly is just as important. Rushing this step is one of the most common causes of spring water damage.

  • Flush antifreeze completely from all lines, tanks, and fixtures
  • Sanitize fresh water tank and lines
  • Inspect all visible plumbing connections for cracks or separation caused by freezing
  • Test hot water heater — both electric and propane modes
  • Check toilet seal and foot pedal operation
  • Run all faucets, shower, and outside shower until water runs clear

3. Roof and Exterior Seals

The Okanagan’s freeze-thaw cycle is particularly hard on roof seals and caulking. A small crack in a seal that looked fine last fall can open up significantly over winter.

  • Inspect entire roof surface for cracks, bubbling, or separation — pay close attention to seams and around any roof-mounted equipment
  • Check all exterior caulking around windows, doors, compartments, and slide-outs
  • Inspect slide-out seals for cracking or compression damage
  • Look for any soft spots on the roof that could indicate water infiltration
  • Clean and condition all rubber roof seals

A roof inspection is the single most important step on this list. Water damage caught early costs hundreds. Water damage caught late costs thousands.

4. Tires and Chassis

RV tires degrade from UV exposure and ozone even when the unit isn’t moving. Age matters as much as tread depth.

  • Check tire pressure cold — including the spare
  • Inspect sidewalls for cracking, crazing, or bulging
  • Check tire manufacture date (DOT code on sidewall) — replace any tire over six years old regardless of appearance
  • Inspect brake operation
  • Check fluid levels — engine oil, coolant, transmission, power steering, brake fluid
  • Inspect belts and hoses for cracking or wear
  • Lubricate all hinges, compartment latches, and slide-out mechanisms

5. Appliances and Safety Systems

  • Test propane system for leaks — use soapy water on all connections or have it pressure tested
  • Test all propane appliances — furnace, refrigerator, cooktop, water heater
  • Test CO detector and smoke alarm — replace batteries and units older than five years
  • Test LP gas detector
  • Check fire extinguisher charge and expiry date
  • Test all interior and exterior lighting

6. Slide-outs and Leveling Systems

  • Extend and retract all slide-outs — listen for unusual sounds and watch for uneven movement
  • Inspect slide-out seals from inside and outside
  • Test leveling jacks or automatic leveling system through a full cycle
  • Lubricate slide-out mechanisms per manufacturer specification

7. Interior

  • Check for any signs of moisture, mould, or musty odour — especially in overhead cabinets, under beds, and in basement compartments
  • Inspect window seals from inside for any water staining
  • Test all interior systems — entertainment, climate control, fans
